article on Salman Rushdie and the secular West's relationship with Islam. It over-states the case a bit, but does reflect stuff I've thought about for a long time: especially in terms of the role of The Satanic Verses in constructing elements of a global Islamist polity (by which I mean a politically active community (in the widest sense), not the
Ummah).
